  • The highest funder (41.94%) and the spender (41.59%) of the R&D sector was the Business Enterprises Sector
  • 6,269 Researchers (Head Count) employed in domestic R&D activities
  • The total Number of FTE researchers was 96.9 per million population

The National R&D Survey

The National Science Foundation is conducting the National R&D Survey on regular basis and publishes the Statistical Handbook. You will find the following R&D inputs and output indicators from this publication.

R&D Input indicators

  • Gross Domestic Expenditure on R&D (GERD)
  • GERD by Research Type, Research Discipline, Sectors
  • Sources of funds for R&D
  • Head count of R&D Scientists and Technicians
  • Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) of R&D scientists

R&D Output indicators

  • Number of research publications
  • Information on patents and industrial designs
  • Postgraduate outputs

The NSF submits above R&D indicators to both international and local statistical databases namely UNESCO,UIS and Sustainable Development Council of Sri Lanka to enhance its global visibility and usage.

Information for the Survey is gathered from the institutional categories that are given below.

  • Government Sector organizations that are involved in R&D activities
  • Higher Education Sector: Government and private universities and higher educational institutes
  • Business Enterprise Sector: R&D activities carried out by the private sector enterprises
  • Private Non-profit Organizations Sector: R&D activities carried out by the Private Non- Profit Organizations
