In a significant move to enhance the quality and sustainability of the batik industry, the National Design Centre (NDC) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) of Sri Lanka in collaboration with Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI) and National Crafts Council (NCC), have launched the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines for the Sri Lankan batik sector. The launching event was held on 6th September 2024 at the Auditorium of the National Design Centre. The guidelines, published as SLS 1770:2023, aimed at elevating the standards of batik production, ensuring better quality, safety, and environmental sustainability. Secretary to the Ministry of Industries, Chairman of NDC, Director Generals of NSF and NDC and other relevant officials representing NDC, NSF, NCC, SLSI, Central Environment Authority (CEA), Sri Lanka Institute of Textile and Apparel (SLITA) and National Enterprise Development Authority (NEDA) were present at this event. Director General of the NSF, Dr Sepalika Sudasinghe graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour and she addressed the gathering highlighting the importance of fostering innovation and the role of NSF in supporting industrial development. The introduction of these guidelines is expected to boost the global competitiveness of Sri Lankan batik products, whilst ensuring adherence to environmental and occupational safety standards. This initiative marks a significant step towards the sustainable development of the batik sector in Sri Lanka.
